Peggy Jarrell Kaplan exhibits photographic portraits of choreographers, visual and performing artists. Ms. Kaplan has been photographing portraits of visual and performing artists from the international avant-garde arts community since 1975. Portrait subjects include Pina Bausch, Mark Morris, Trisha Brown, Merce Cunningham, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Robert Wilson, Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, and members of internationally diverse groups such as Sankai Juku and the cast of The Mahabharata.
Kaplan's portraits of choreographers feature those who have chosen to explore new forms of dance. Choreographers from the major international dance movements are represented, including post-modern dance from New York (the early Judson Church pioneers and their heirs), Butoh from Japan, expressionism and dance theatre from Germany, and new dance from France and Montreal.
The artist's portraits have been exhibited at the Lincoln Center Library and Museum of the Performing Arts in a joint exhibition of Avant-Garde Dance in 1985, and were recently shown in Amsterdam in conjunction with the Holland Festival and at the International Festival of Dance in Montpellier, France. Most recently, the portraits of the cast of The Mahabharata were exhibited in Scotland under the auspices of the Glasgow Festival 1990. Ms. Kaplan was portrait photographer for the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1984 and 1985.
Peggy Jarrell Kaplan's work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. This exhibition will be her first at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts.
