Bits & Pieces

[Joseph Beuys](https://feldmangallery.com/artist-home/joseph-beuys) Nov 17 – Dec 22, 1989

Joseph Beuys

Butter Pots, 1983

Description

*Bits & Pieces* is the collection of works dating from 1957 –1986 assembled by Beuys for his friend and biographer, Caroline Tisdall. It consists of over 200 objects, drawings, and multiples intended to offer a microcosm of the artist's concerns, from nature and the evolutionary process, to the survival of the spirit, and the planet, in our own materialist times.

Beuys' alchemy of materials is represented through fat, felt, iron, sulphur, hare's blood even stags, skulls. His struggles within the fields of education and politics are here, right through to his concern for the greening of our awareness and his own contribution of 7000 oaks to the reforestation of the planet.

*Witches' Point* is a sequence of poems by Caroline Tisdall and photographs by another friend, and fellow conservationist. Paul van Vlissingen. Over a period of thirteen lunar months they paid tribute to the power and beauty of a small spit of constantly changing land in Loch Maree in the remotest northwest highlands of Scotland. As with Beuys, universal themes are constant – a shared sense of wonder at the vast time-scale of our planet, respect for its state of constant flux, and fear for its survival.

"Nature's cycle spirals on and out," and the Celtic forms and legends loved by Beuys abound here too, along with the stag and the last remnants of the great oak forests.

Caroline Tisdall, writer and filmmaker, worked with Beuys on many books, exhibitions, and the Free International University. It is exactly 10 years since the Beuys retrospective which she curated at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
