Modern Olympia (after Manet), 1997-2001 (detail)

Description

Ida Applebroog will be exhibiting Modern Olympia at the Feldman Gallery from January 12 to February 9. This, the twelfth exhibition at the Feldman Gallery, includes paintings from 1997 to the present and represents a major shift of focus. Applebroog’s springboard for these works is Manet’s Olympia, which presented a new way of freeing women’s sexuality from shame. This subject matter, as depicted by women artists, is rare in art history. In this exhibition, Applebroog presents a counterpoint to our culture’s measure of youth and sexuality by introducing aging into the equation.
