Description

Allan Wexler will exhibit models, furniture, photographs and drawings of recent work and works in progress from 1985-1988.

Wexler's work transcends the boundaries which can define our perception of the common chair or table. In Chair-A-Day, Wexler spontaneously constructed one chair per day for 15 days, beginning each day/chair with fresh thoughts.

The use of unexpected materials is frequently seen in Wexler's work. Asphalt floor tiles appear on a kitchen table top; scaffolding material comprises a dining set. The unusual combination of materials can be seen in Dining Set of Four Hardwoods which incorporates hardwoods from four distant lands to form a microcosm in a table.

Wexler toys with stereotypes of space as well. The full-scale Little Office Building #2 appears to be a self-contained, indoor "out building" with all the necessary elements of an office. Upon further inspection, it becomes evident that the walls slide to open the office "inside-out" to form a screen-like office unit.

Also on view will be photographs of completed projects, drawings and models including Proposals for the Typical House which consists of 68 altered photocopies of the plan of a typical suburban house, plus models of 25 of the proposals.
