There are varieties of apricot that you cannot buy at the supermarket. Many types of plum and peach and cherry, snubbed by commercial growers, have become so uncommon that they're essentially endangered. Yet there's a tree in New York City where many of these heirloom stonefruits still flourish. Created by the artist Sam van Aken, this tree is cultivated to grow a different variety on virtually every branch, all grafted onto the same stalwart trunk, a sort of arboreal equivalent to Noah's Ark.
