Immigrating to the United States in the late 1970s, the Soviet artists Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid adjusted to the American way of life by founding their own company. Their business model demonstrated a profound appreciation of capitalism. They bought people’s souls to sell at a profit. Meticulous with contracts, the artists also had a knack for marketing. One of their first acquisitions was sourced from Andy Warhol, who supported their burgeoning enterprise by providing his soul gratis.
