Cameron Hayes
Cameron Hayes
Biography
Australian painter Cameron Hayes creates densely populated, dystopian worlds that call to mind the grotesquerie of Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights—but Hayes’ scenes address the modern world. Hayes blends stories ripped from present-day headlines and fictional themes, in effect producing paintings filled with charged contemporary subjects: pollution, political corruption and terrorism, economic inequality, and the sexualization of children in the media. One of his most controversial series centered on the Australian Aboriginal community of Tiwi Island, which Hayes painted in his signature, unsettling style, populating landscapes with graffiti and squalor; the show was cancelled amid public outcry, before being hosted elsewhere.
