Biography
Creating works that belie or falsify the conditions of their making, Keith Cottingham uses technology to cast a suspicious eye on art, and on photography in particular. He does this in works that include a series of detailed “portraits” created without actual models; they are actually based on sculptures created by the artist, which he scanned and digitally embellished. For another project, he used albumen prints to create historical documents of imaginary people, places, and events. His interest in this uncertainty of the document has also extended to the future, in detailed 3-D renderings of places—both natural and man-made—that have never existed.
