Word - Nerve series, 1990

Description

Edwin Schlossberg, in two new series of works, WORD:NERVE and TIDAL GESTURE, continues to explore the relationship between the content and context of words.

The WORD:NERVE series is comprised of poems and lists of words floating on fiberglass panels which diffuse like lanterns. The lists of words consist of those words having the most multiple meanings in the Oxford English Dictionary within each letter of the alphabet. The lists of words are evocative, and each viewer?s experience is enriched by isolating or comparing the words. The poems which accompany the lists are based on ideas which arose in thinking about the words.

TIDAL GESTURE, a series of five works, is concerned with both the intellectual and aesthetic construction and deconstruction of meaning through the use of language and intuition. The works are composed of separate Plexiglas sheets containing fragments of letters which, when precisely aligned, combine to form letters, words, and poems. As the viewer moves through the gallery, the fragments of the poems alternately break apart or converge to create changing visual and poetic possibilities.

A catalogue of the exhibition is available. This will mark Edwin Schlossberg?sf ifth exhibition at the Feldman Gallery. He is president of Edwin Schlossberg, Inc., an exhibit design and development firm.
