Marginalia (goggles-black face), 1996

Description

Ida Applebroog's tenth exhibition at the Feldman Gallery, entitled Living, includes a new series of White paintings and free standing canvases from her recurring Marginalia series. The recent paintings of Applebroog contrast our attempt to impose domestic order against the chaos we find within ourselves, in families, and in the world. Large, white images and seemingly disconnected fragments are flanked by calendar strips. But instead of homey Martha Stewartisms -- "Prepare for paella party" or "Prune tea roses" -- Applebroog's bizarre notations border on the schizoid -- "Plan cure for ugliness" or "Bake fartlets." In addition to these White paintings, Applebroog presents Marginalia. Painted in blood red, these panels convey stark moments of disquieting interactions between individuals.
